After a week-long debate Somalia's National Constituent Assembly has endorsed a new constitution, marking an end to a series of transitional administrations over the past 20 years.

A new parliament is to be elected by the country's traditional elders, and that body will then choose a president and elect a government.

The hope is that the constitution will provide individual rights that have been largely non-existent, and that it will provide the framework for a strong and representative government.

But many are doubtful that these aims can be achieved in a divided state marked by violence and instability.

Young Somalis in Britain face a huge challenge. They have some of the worst records in education, employment and youth crime.

They find themselves alienated from traditional Somali culture but not fitting into British society, either.

Now hundreds of parents have decided that the best thing to do is to send their children back to Somalia.

UN warns over drone operations in Somalia

The Washington Post reported that in recent years, a small teams of Special Operations forces and CIA operatives have gradually stepped up secret missions inside Somalia.

At least 10 of those flights involved drones, according to the report, which provided dates and locations but few other details. U.N. officials said they catalogued the flights from “confidential international agency security reports” and press reports.

Somalia : British soldiers on the ground

The Times newspaper says two British soldiers in uniform were seen about 20 miles outside their main base in Mogadishu, in an area which was a former al-Shabaab stronghold as recently as May.

One of them appears to be a medic from the Parachute Regiment, and according to the report they were seen patrolling along the edge of a refugee camp, chatting to children and shaking hands.

Somalia prepares for presidential elections

After 12 years of feeble transitional governments, Somalia is slated to have a permanent administration that theoretically will be able to borrow money from the World Bank, sign binding bilateral treaties and buy weapons from the world markets - some of the many things transitional governments were unable to do.

If it all goes according to plan, 135 clan elders who represent a convoluted power-distribution model that arbitrarily compartmentalizes Somalis into four and half clans, will select 225 members to the new parliament sometime in July. The new MPs will in turn elect a speaker and his deputies on August 4, and a president on August 20.
